One type of educational grant that has been mentioned many times in the news are left handed scholarships. However not many people can apply for them. In order to qualify for this grant, one has to fit into the physical characteristics listed out. Left handed scholarships are also given to bright pupils to help them pay for their college education.

The Frederick and Mary F Beckley Scholarship

Created in 1979, the Frederick and Mary F Beckley Scholarship, that also goes by the Beckley Scholarship, is a study grant that is exclusive to left handed individuals. Since 1979, there have been over 40 scholarship recipients who have benefited from the scholarship founded by Ms. Mary Francis Beckley, who used to be from Juniate College.

The Beckley Scholarship awards an annual allowance of around $1,000 to $1,500 to sophomores, juniors, or seniors who study at Juniata College. Other than the usual criterias of applying to normal scholarships, the left handed scholarship is unique as it can only be used in Juniata College. So if one happens to get this Beckley scholarship, he or she will be resigned to continue their education at Juniata College in Huntington, PA.

How Did Left Handed Scholarships Come About

The Beckley Scholarship was so founded for lefties on the belief that if you accept yourself as you are, it will lead you to your destiny. In 1919, Mary Francis and Frederick Beckley were both left handed students who strongly felt that there are no differences between a lefty or a righty, even in sports like tennis. Although there were great left handed tennis players like John McEnroe and Rod Laver, the future Mr. and Mrs. Beckley united because of a commonality: being a lefty. You know the rest of the story.
